Description

[Designed & Assembled in California]

Also known as "Big Ground Plane", the mRo GPS u-Blox Neo-M8N BGP has the ideal 7cm x 7cm ground plane for this specific antenna, giving you the maximum sensitivity you can possibly get at this price point. In theory, the module should reach the maximum gain the antenna can provide which is 5dBi.

Compared to our other modules with the same antenna but a smaller ground plane like this one here, we have noticed an increase of 6 dBHz, which is roughly 400% increase in sensitivity (Is not linear, is logarithmic). This number is huge, especially if you take for example a GPS unit from our closest competition -which is related to me-, and you measure it, you will see a 75% less sensitivity compared with our small ground plane unit. That means this unit has a 475% increase over our closest "competitor".

We obtained this data with our GPS signal simulator, which is hooked to a faraday cage that allows us to test and compare antenna performance in a controlled and repeatable environment. Every single unit we ship has to pass through this procedure.

We decided to combine the LIS3MDL and IST8310 compasses to make it compatible across all platforms and provide redundancy. Please confirm your flight stack is compatible with them.

Current compatibility:
PX4: Supports LIS3MDL.
ArduCopter (3.5.4 and beyond): Supports both, LIS3MDL and IST8310.
ArduPlane (3.8.3 and beyond): Supports IST8310 (LIS3MDL coming soon).

Note: You must have Rev.3 of the STM32F4 microcontroller in order to support the above mags. You should have NO problems using them If you purchased any of our autopilots.

Featuring the latest Taoglas Antenna tuned for GPS + GLONASS, which provides a higher gain compared to any of its predecessors (from 1.5dBi to 5dBi) and dual Compass, the LIS3MDL by ST and the IST8310 by iSentek which is based on the legendary HMC5983 technology and is licensed by Honeywell.

A micro USB port enables you to access all u-Blox features via u-Center and power the device. Please refer to this document if you have driver issues.

The unit has a status RGD LED ready to go (works the same way as PixHawk1). Right now the RGB is populated but is not supported yet, still, we are not charging you for it, but you at least know that eventually, your LED will light up when using PX4 and ArduPilot stack software. We wrote a little Arduino tool that allows you to fire it up and play with it. If you an interested please contact us.

Extra Info: HMC5983 and the IST8310 are pin compatible (Either one is placed on the board but not both). There is a 3rd option, QMC5883L, that we might support later. If you need help identifying which version you have, please refer to this document.

Background:

The mRo GPS NEO-M8N is a professional grade, robust GPS system capable of sensing USA (GPS), Russian (GLONASS) and European (Galileo) constellations at the same time. You can optionally enable the Chinese (Bai Du) constellation in exchange for disabling GLONASS (this might change in the future by incoming firmware updates).
This solution will provide you with an astonishingly accurate position and fast satellite acquisition. Our testing reported an average HDOP of '0.6', which is in other words awesome.

uBlox engineers collaborated with us on the layout of this board. All their recommendations, as well as our own experience, have been incorporated to deliver to you our best GPS module ever.

This module has the DroneCode standard GPS 6-Pins JST-GH connector defined here. We also include an auxiliary i2c port for future expansion using JST-GH connector standard and a status -RGB- LED.

You can read more about all its features on the official u-Blox web page here. Remember we are using the authentic NEO-M8N-01 module, 'Professional grade.'

This GPS gets a fix much quicker than the original 3DR gps/magnetometer. I'm using this with the mRo Pixhawk 2.4.6. I ran into 2 problems: the MRC0200 cable needs to be purchased or made and then the firmware used on the Pixhawk must be ArduCopter-v3.px4. Mission planner uses ArduCopter-v2.px4 by default which does not support the external magnetometers. ArduCopter-v3.px4 is made for the STM32F4 Rev.3 which some older Pixhawks will not support. Christian Tejada (mRo) was a huge from in getting this working.
